Air-fryer-tortilla-chips

Can you cook tortilla chips in the air fryer? Absolutely! The air fryer can give a nice crunch to these delicious wraps without the extra oil and fat. They make a healthy snack alternative to fried chips.

From sweet to savory, there are so many ways to make tortilla chips in the air fryer. My favorites are to make air fryer tortilla chips low carb style or add cinnamon for a sweet variation. Let’s start to discuss the details.

How To Make Air Fryer Tortilla Chips

What You’ll Need

Air Fryer

The air fryer is a good way of making fried foods without added fat and oil. I use the SUPER DEAL PRO which has a 3.7-quartz air fryer basket capacity. The best air fryer depends on your preference.

You need to consider a lot of things, like the capacity, ease of use, and accessories. Air fryers that have a capacity of 3-5.3 quartz can serve 2-5 people. If you have a large family, look for air fryers that are larger than 5.3 quartz.

Tortilla

There are many types of tortillas available for your selection- corn, flour, grain-free, etc. You can use any tortilla for Recipe 2 but for Recipe 1, you need to be cautious.

You want to use low carb tortillas to be acceptable for the Keto diet. I like Mama Lupe Low Carb Tortillas because they taste almost the same with regular tortillas. However, they contain gluten which may be cause allergies to some people.

If you’re allergic to gluten, I recommend that you stay away from wheat and make your own tortillas from scratch. The ingredients you’ll need to make low carb tortillas are whole psyllium husks, coconut flour, almond flour, baking powder, sea salt, water, and olive oil.

Cooking Oil Spray

You’ll need a little bit of cooking oil to make the tortilla chips extra crispy. You can use any cooking oil you want. But for Recipe 1, you need to be extra careful.

The Keto diet requires the consumption of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats of natural oils. Using processed vegetable oils can expel you due to their high content of carbohydrates. The best oils to use for the keto diet are sesame oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, olive oil, and walnut oil.

Salt

The salt will season your tortillas to add more flavor. For Keto, I use sea salt because they’re natural and unrefined. If you want more flavor, you can add other seasonings, like chili powder, cumin, and garlic powder.

Cinnamon (Only For Recipe 2)

For your cinnamon tortilla chips, you need some cinnamon. This brown colored spice has a sweet flavor and a woody fragrance that enhances the flavor of tortilla chips. Combined a tablespoon of ground cinnamon with 1/2 cup granulated sugar to make cinnamon sugar.

Pizza Cutter

A pizza comes in handy when you want to cut the tortillas into triangles. If you can’t find any pizza cutter in your kitchen, use a regular knife. Just be careful not to cut yourself.

Plate

You’ll need a plate to set your tortillas when you have to cut them into triangles. Any plate will do- plastic, glass, or ceramic. Alternatively, you can use a wooden board to set your tortillas for cutting.

Recipe 1: Air Fryer Tortilla Chips Keto

1. Make Tortillas From Scratch

Skip this step and proceed to step 2 if you want to use store-bought tortillas. If you want to make your own tortillas from scratch, continue reading.

In a bowl, combine 1/4 cup psyllium husks, 1 cup almond flour, 2 tablespoons coconut flour, and 1/4 teaspoon sea salt. Add 1/4 cup water then knead to make a dough. Divide the dough into six pieces and flatten into round tortilla shapes.

Grill onto a pancake grill at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until browned. Cool the cooked tortillas in the fridge for several hours or overnight.

2. Preheat The Air Fryer

Set the temperature at 400 degrees Fahrenheit and the timer to five minutes. Some units may require you to preheat the unit on a different duration, so read the manufacturer’s instructions first before preheating. Let your air fryer run empty and once the timer is done, you’re ready to start cooking.

3. Prepare The Tortillas For Cooking

Spray a little bit of oil on both sides of the tortillas set on a plate. Using a pizza cutter, cut the tortillas into triangles. Sprinkle with a bit of salt and put in the air fryer basket in a single layer.

4. Cook The Tortilla Chips

Set the cooking temperature of the air fryer to 360 degrees Fahrenheit and the time to 10 minutes. Start cooking and remove the air fryer basket halfway through. Flip the tortillas to cook the other side then reinsert the air fryer basket into the unit to continue the cooking process.

Check the chips two minutes before the time to see if the chips have reached your desired crispiness. Add two more minutes if you want the chips to be extra crispy.

5. Serve And Enjoy

Once the tortillas are done, serve immediately with a low-carb dipping sauce. I serve mine with cucumber salsa because it contains less sugar than tomato salsa.

Recipe 2: Air Fryer Cinnamon Tortilla Chips

1. Prepare The Ingredients

Gather your tortilla, melted butter, cinnamon, and sugar. Combine the cinnamon with sugar to make cinnamon sugar.

2. Cut, Oil, And Line Up The Tortillas

Using a pizza cutter or knife, slice the tortillas into triangles or wedges. Spray each side with an oil sprayer.

Next, place the tortillas in the preheated air fryer basket in a single layer. Edges can slightly overlap but you shouldn’t pile the tortilla triangles on each other.

3. Cook The Tortillas

Cook flour tortillas for 3-5 minutes or 6-8 minutes for corn tortillas. Toss them halfway through the cooking time. Tortillas are done when they turn golden brown and crisp.

4. Sprinkle With Cinnamon Sugar

Once the tortillas are done, remove the air fryer basket. Sprinkle with salt and cinnamon sugar mixture while still hot.

5. Serve And Enjoy

Serve your cinnamon tortilla chips with your favorite Mexican dish. You can also serve them as a treat after your meal. They go well with fruit salsas, melted chocolate, and frosting.

Additional Pro Tips

Have leftover tortilla chips? Store them an airtight container at room temperature. You want the container to be airtight as possible to maintain the crunchiness of the chips. Properly stored chips can last for several weeks.

Don’t overcrowd the air fryer basket. It’s alright for the chips to overlap a little but don’t stack them too much or they won’t come out crispy.

Use corn tortillas if you want the chips to come out crispy. The corn flour tortillas produce the crispiest chips. If you want the chips to be more chewy, use flour tortillas.

Final Thought

Creating your own tortilla chips is truly satisfying. You can adjust the seasonings to make air fryer tortilla chips savory or sweet like you always wanted. The best thing about air frying your tortilla chips is that you lose the guilt of eating your favorite snack because they use a little bit of oil.

Know, too, that some foods may cause allergies. If you’re allergic to gluten, stay away from wheat and make your own tortilla chips from scratch. For questions and suggestions, comment below.
